What is Therapeutic Riding?
This form of therapy
and recreation involves the use of a horse or pony to facilitate
the mental
or physical health of a human. The person may ride, drive, or simply groom and
pet the equine, and
gains balance, trust, self-esteem and joy from the interaction with this creature.
Animals are wonderful
for those with disabilities because they are non-judgmental, and accept everyone
for who they are.
Where do The Center
animals come from?
Some are donated, others are purchased
from bad situations, and more still are on loan to us from other
barns. Most are our animals were in some way needy or neglected themselves;
they didn’t have a home, or were abused or malnourished. Some
were donated to us by kind people who wanted their animal to be involved
with a program such as The Center. In the future, The Center hopes
to be able to take-in and rehabilitate large numbers of needy livestock
and pets. If you have an animal that needs a home, or could help
out at The Center, please call!
Who is served at The
Center?
We invite any individual who has a diagnosed disability
to join our therapy/recreation program. For individuals without
diagnosed disabilities, we still offer many other educational programs,
and riding lessons. Also, don’t forget our mobile
outreach unit!
How can I help The
Center?
The Center is always in need of volunteers, and
will welcome anyone with an interest in helping others. No prior
animal/therapy experience is necessary. We will train you. This is
a great way for kids to earn service hours as well! Monetary and
equipment donations are always appreciated, as well. Please see our
Wish List page for more information!
How can I contact The
Center?
To receive quarterly newsletters, email updates,
and volunteer information, or to learn more about The Center in
general, please call 240-417-0981, or email us
at nkurtz@theunicorncenter.org...thanks!
